General information –
• This quarry is not a done deal • Processing construction aggregate in a rock quarry is an industrial activity • Precedent: Rock quarries in Carroll County are zoned Industrial, i.e. Vulcan – Villa Rica • Carroll County Comprehensive Plan requires rock quarrying in industrial districts • The proposed site would have to be rezoned from Ag to Industrial: We are opposed to any rezoning Impact to Public Health, Safety, and Welfare – • Air pollution: direct – particulate matter generated from aggregate mining dust • Air pollution: indirect – from both on and off-road diesel trucks • Noise pollution – explosions, machinery, on and off-road trucks • Trucking hazards – more traffic, shortcuts through neighborhoods, school bus stops • Unintended consequences – Spreading contaminants to other communities via trucking • Other impact i.e. water, wildlife, wetlands – to be determined by the experts Impact to the Environs: Southeast Carroll, West Coweta, South Fulton, and Southeast Douglas counties – • Endangered Ag lands – this quarry poses a threat to a homogeneous region of agricultural and rural way-of-lifestyle that is outside the influence of the urban sprawl • Industrial “Creep” – begins a long term domino effect that invites additional industries that grow into dense concentrations that do not contribute to the neighborhood – example: Fulton Industrial Parkway • Endangerment to Historic Cultural Districts – Industrialization erases artifacts and obscures attempts for interpretive events • Contributes to the state decline in agricultural lands – agricultural lands lost due to industrial and urbanization never return – gone forever Impact to the Chattahoochee River – • Direct Pollution from mining operations along the river corridor – air borne dust and particulate matter, machinery noise, explosions, ground tremors, etc. • Downstream impact – additional environmental contaminants into the river • Endangerment to current and future recreational programs – major disruption to the long term Chattahoochee trails program and recreational river accesses • Other considerations – to be determined by the experts |
